    Introduction to book discussions

If you'd like to discuss books and literature, or the arts generally, or anything on my literary pages, a good way of doing it is through one of the discussion forums listed below. Some ar blogs, and some are mailing lists or newsgroups

    Blogs and journals

Blogs (WeB LOGS) are usually personal, but sometimes communal comments about various topics, and many of them are devoted to books and literature. Here are some that deal with the topics of the literary pages on this site.

    Eldil (Neoinklings) Mailing List

    Click to join eldil

    Click to join eldil

Eldil (Neoinklings) is a discussion forum on YahooGroups for discussing Christianity and literature, and especially the works of the Inklings

    Communal Blogs and Journals

These are forums in which several people may initiate discussions, and others can leave comments.

    1. Coinherence Community on LiveJournal - for discussing the works of the Inklings -- C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Charles Williams, Owen Barfield & Co.
    2. The Beat Generation Community on LiveJournal - for discussing Beat Generation authors like Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder and other beats and Dharma bums
    3. The C.S. Lewis Community on LiveJournal - for discussing the works of C.S. Lewis, both fiction and non-fiction

    Individual Blogs and Journals

Individual blogs and journals rarely stick to one topic, and usually include more than literary discussions. But if they are interested in the same kind of books as you, you might also find some of the things that they or their friends have to say on other topics interesting too.

    1. Methodius's LiveJournal -- yes, it's mine. I don't always discuss literature, but you will see some posts on the Inklings, Alan Garner, and Beat Generation authors, and the comments of others on them.
    2. Notes from underground -- notes on books, politics and society.
    3. Khanya - a blog with a greater emphasis on theological topics.

Do you have a literary blog or journal? Leave a comment in the visitors book or forums and I may put a link to it here, if I like what I see.

    Usenet Newsgroups

Newsgroups are open discussion forums that anyone can join. As a result there is sometimes a poor signal/noise ratio, but this does not usually apply to the books and literature ones.

    • alt.books.inklings -- a rather underused newsgroup for discussing the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, Owen Barfield et al.
    • alt.books.beat-generation -- a fairly low-traffic group for discussing the works, lives and times of Beat Generation writers and poets, such as Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso, Gary Snyder, Philip Whalen and others of the Dharma bums.
    • rec.arts.books -- a fairly active newsgroup for discussing books in general. All authors, all periods, all genres.
    • rec.arts.books.childrens -- for discussing books written for children and the authors who write them. One thing that it is quite impressive about this group is that you can ask about a book you read as a child, but whose author and title you can't remember, and nine times out of ten someone will tell you, from only the vaguest plot descirption.

It is a site where you can list and calalogue your books, make recommendations to others, and find friends who share similar tastes in reading to your own.

Bibliophil is another book listing site. It lets you store and rate your entire collection in a library. If you think our taste in books is similar, you can add me as your friend and then we can recommend books to each other or request to borrow them.
